Export of Scrap Metal & Removal of Import Duty on Solar Energy Products

The most recently announced Mid-Term Budget Statement announced by Minister of Finance on 14 July 2010 opened some opportunities for Zimbabwean SMEs in the field of international trade.

Export of Scrap Metal

As you may remember from my previous article ‘Passports for Export’, all scrap metal exports from Zimbabwe were banned starting 1 August 2004 in order to promote their use in the local production.

On 14 July 2010, in the Mid-Term Budget Statement, the Minister of Finance announced that, with effect from 1 August 2010, scrap metal generated as a by-product of the production process shall be exempted from the aforementioned export ban. However, export licences of such scrap metal shall still be required and these are issued by the relevant Ministry on a case by case basis.

SMEs who have access to such scrap metal can now have a better business opportunity to export the by-product scrap metal to their clients. The SMEs should approach Ministry of Mines for the export licence of such scrap metal.

Removal of Import Duty on Solar Energy Products

In support of investment in solar energy, on 14 July 2010, in the Mid-Term Budget Statement, the Minister of Finance announced the removal of import duty customs duty on solar panels, inverters, batteries, regulators, geysers, lanterns, water pumps & heaters and energy saving bulbs with effect from 1 August 2010.

I am very intrigued by the way the ball is rolling in terms of business opportunities and how your blog is designed to intertwine both the micro and macro business field. I would like to look back and thank you for your awakening for all wise advise. I'm in.

  2. Thanks Herrman. Your feedback is most welcome. It is true that more and more business opportunities are opening up. However, it only takes an entrepreneurial eye to pierce through the market and see the profitable niches or broader needs which are not being served well and take advantage. At the very end, try to remain focused on quality and engage more cost effective marketing strategies like online marketing for promoting your products and/or brand. I will carry more business advice on online marketing in future.

  5. Getting a permit is not a gambling exercise - you are almost assured of getting a permit when the door for such permits is open. When you have identified your source of scrap metal and you present your application to the requisite Ministry, assumming that permits are still being issued when your application is presented, you will always get yours. Am not sure if you are ordinarily a resident of Zimbabwe - the permits are given to the residents of Zimbabwe, unless if there are exceptional cases, who will then export the scrap from Zimbabwe. If you are a foreigner, identify the source (Zimbabwe company or individual)of scrap metal and ask the Zimbabwe company/individual to apply for the export permit which you will then use to get your scrap metal out of Zimbabwe.

    2. The export permits are obtainable from Ministry of Industry (Mukwati Building - I think 13th Floor, I am not sure about the floor).

    1. When placing your export leads, please always ensure that you put the country codes (eg +27...for South Africa) to make it easy for international callers to be in contact.

    1. There are challenges among exporters from Zimbabwe on exportation of scrap metal from the country especially those who are not the primary owners of the scrap materials. Scrap metals are now controlled products which need export permit from the Government but in the meantime I want to believe you may link up with many exporters who are actually the primary owners of the scrap metals, as these have a better chance of getting export permits than middlemen.
